How convert a loft (sceptic)

Let’s face it – it can be hard to agree what to do with your property. One of you wants to work on the garden but the other’s all about the decor; one of you’s a mattress fanatic while the other’s obsessed with the floor. And so, when you finally realise a loft conversion is what your home’s been waiting for, you may be confronted with that most formidable of opponents – a loft sceptic.

In what follows, we provide you with a guide on how to convert a loft (sceptic) and get them to see what a loft could mean.

Know your figures

First things first – be clear exactly why it is you want a loft. Is it the money? Housing Market research suggests a loft conversion can increase a house’s value by 20%; Nationwide estimate you could add £37,000. Add to that money saved on heating and the relative cheapness of the added space, and it’s hard not to agree.

Or is it all the things you can do? Building a games room, a workout space, an extra bedroom for guests? Is it the extra light source? Having a room with a view? Make sure you have a clear set of arguments – if you’re going to convince anyone, you first need to convince yourself!

Know your audience

Every person is different – some will be won over by the financial incentives, while others want to hear how you could use the space. The key is to know what will appeal to your sceptic, what will make them see things the way you do. Maybe your wife has friends who could stay in a loft-converted bedroom; maybe your husband could use the space to finally get fit!

Get close ones on side

Once you’ve got your arguments in line, and you know how best to deploy them, you should be set. But a loft sceptic can be hard to convince, and you may need to enlist a slightly sneakier tactic. If you’ve got kids, sell them on the idea first, and see if your partner has it in them to resist the puppy dog eyes; if you’ve got neighbours, get them to make waves about converting their loft, and your see if your partner doesn’t suddenly want to get there first!

I approached Aztech for a loft conversion quote and they came promptly and quoted quickly. Their quote was the lowest but, unfortunately, they were in great demand and it would be 6 months before they could begin. That's the only reason we didn't book them. 2024 UPDATE. We contacted them again because our chosen builder cancelled. Aztech requoted and agreed to take on the job. Again, due to their commitments, we had to wait several months but they started the work in June 2022. It soon emerged that our architect had made a serious miscalculation which made the job significantly bigger. Aztech gave a fair quote for the extra work but had to complete the job over several months rather than several weeks. They did a great job, though. They employed skilled and pleasant joiners, plumbers, electricians and roofers. Since completion, they've come back to fix a problem with a couple of roof slates under warranty. We'd employ them again.

My 2 children have been living in our loft conversion for just under a year. I can honestly say it is the best money we have ever spent. Ross and the team were great throughout. Everyone came exactly when they said they were coming. Using Aztech completely took away the stress that usually comes with any building work. I have had 2 very small issues in the past year and Ross has sent someone to fix them within 2 days. My only regret is not doing it sooner. We have 2 fantastic bedrooms and a full bathroom up there - perfect for teenagers. I was really worried that the loft would be too hot in summer and cold in winter but it is exactly the same as the rest of the house, in fact through summer it was the coolest place in the house. Ross and the Aztech team did a great job on our dormer loft in summer 2022. We added an additional bathroom and reconfigured the first floor to create a study. The bedroom in the dormer has bespoke storage. Our property is small, but the design has made great use of available space. The work was completed in good time with only a couple of minor delays. We have been very happy with the finish and quality of everything and most people coming into the house comment very positively (including other tradespeople). The team were very professional with clean up after every day and were tried to disturb us minimally while we worked from home. They were also happy to discuss the work and answer questions and make helpful suggestions. Ross had regular catch up calls and visited at key stages of the project to talk things through. Minimal snagging (some is to be expected) and problems corrected without fuss. Aztech loft rooms completely gutted our attic which had not been touched for 170 years! They removed loads of debris, rubble, tanks, wood, metal etc and then boarded the whole loft and added 3 velux windows, a new door to the roof and a new trap access door.
